Key points from the video:

You may need to go for some procedures following heart failure. There can be uncertainty around the different kinds of procedures and how you should prepare for them.

Procedures for heart failure:

  • Biventricular pacemaker or cardiac resynchronisation therapy: Implantation of a cardiac device (pacemaker) to improve pumping

  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD): Reset the heart rhythm

  • Ablation: Modify the heart’s electrics and stabilise the heart rhythm

These are implanted under the left collar bone or the top of the leg/wrist, with the wires to the heart. You will be given a local anaesthetic and sedative.

To prepare for your procedure, your cardiologist should give you exact details about:

  • Medications

  • Food and drinks

  • Special instructions about showering and cleaning your skin

  • Special instructions if you have severe back pain

This can be done in a pre-operative appointment or telephone call.

During the procedure:

  • Injection of painkiller and sedative

  • Stinging sensation and pushing sensation then usually no more pain

  • Do not panic of there is some pain and discomfort

  • Tell the nurse and you will be given more painkiller and sedative

After the procedure:

  • Usually be able to go home on the same day or the next day

  • Need someone to drive you home and help you out for a few days

  • Your cardiologist and team will advise you on your limitations after your procedure

Write down any questions you have and get in touch with your cardiologist or the hospital department.
