Child & Adolescent Assessments

Assessments available for children and adolescents. Please note: My Psych Clinic does not currently offer assessments for children younger than 6 years old.

Our team of highly skilled psychologists at My Psych Clinic specialises in conducting assessments for children and adolescents across various developmental areas. Our assessment services include:

  • Diagnostic Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Cognitive Ability and Functioning Testing

  • Evaluation of Learning Difficulties, including Specific Learning Difficulties

  • Diagnostic Assessment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Adaptive Behavior and Functional Assessment for NDIS or other support purpose

How can a cognitive assessment benefit my child?

A cognitive assessment provides valuable insights into your child's strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to maximise their learning potential, enhance areas of strength, and address areas of weakness. The results of the assessment are often utilised by schools and organisations, such as Education Queensland, to determine eligibility for additional support, programs, or services. While the assessment results do not guarantee access to these resources, they can aid in accessing various services.

Parents often find that cognitive assessments empower them to advocate for their child's needs within the school environment. It can help demonstrate:

  • Your child is not misbehaving but rather struggling to keep pace and requires additional support

  • Your child is not slow to learn but may face challenges in specific areas, such as reading or attention

  • Support needed based on specific weaknesses, such as verbal communication or language skills

  • Cognitive skills are developing appropriately, and any issues may be related to mood or social skills.

Assessments Available For Adults

My Psych Clinic has highly skilled psychologists who are available to conduct assessments for adults in a range of areas, including:

  1. Diagnostic Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD);

  2. Cognitive ability / functioning testing;

  3. Learning difficulties, including specific learning difficulties;

  4. Diagnostic Assessment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD);

  5. Adaptive Behaviour / Functional Assessment for NDIS or other support purposes.

How can a cognitive assessment help me?

The results of the assessment show areas of strength and weakness which can help you to maximize your learning, further enhance areas of strength, and compensate or develop areas of weakness.  The overall scores are often used by organisations (such as Centrelink) to determine if someone qualifies for additional support, programs, or even payments. The results of this test cannot guarantee any of these things, but may help a person access different services.

People often say that cognitive testing helps them to:

  • understand their own abilities better

  • focus on areas of strength and develop their potential in these areas

  • understand what to do to overcome barriers to progress at work and home

  • receive appropriate support from government services or other services

Adult Assessments
Neuropsychology Assessments

My Psych Clinic has highly skilled Neuropsychologists and Neuropsychology Registrars that can conduct assessments for children, adolescents and adults. It is important that some assessments be conducted by someone with further training in neuropsychology in order to ensure thorough and accurate results and reports.

A neuropsychological assessment may benefit you if you have any of the following conditions or require specific assessments such as:

  • Acquired brain injuries

  • Neurological conditions (e.g., Dementia, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Tumours, Epilepsy)

  • Neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., ASD, ADHD, learning difficulties)

  • Comprehensive Neuropsychological Assessments

  • Dementia Diagnostic Assessments

  • NDIS Assessments

  • Return to Work Assessments

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessment/testing is a process by which a person’s cognitive, psychological/emotional and behavioural functioning is comprehensively assessed. When our brain functioning is altered in some way (e.g., due to an injury, medical, or developmental condition), aspects of our thinking skills such as memory, language or motor ability can be impacted. A neuropsychological assessment will help in determining what changes have occurred and how these changes are impacting your life. This information can then assist in diagnosis, intervention planning and treatment.

Couples Therapy

At My Psych Clinic we view your relationship as an essential foundation  for mental health.  Couples therapy is not a luxury, nor is it unimportant or trivial.  Research has shown that when relationships are in distress, couples therapy can not only improve your over well being and satisfaction with life, but can also be used to treat conditions such as depression and PTSD.  Improving your relationship can also be a powerful step towards being a better parent, allowing you to be kinder, more patient, work better as a team, and importantly, model to your children how to have healthy relationships later in their lives.

We have psychologists who are highly trained in evidence-based couples therapy and can assist with a wide range of relationship concerns, including –

  • High conflict relationships

  • Loss of connection

  • Infidelity

  • Sexual concerns

  • Amicable separation

Our psychologists have completed postgraduate level training in clinical psychology before continuing on with extensive training and supervision in couples therapy.  We can assist couples using evidence-based treatments such as Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) or behavioural couples therapy, as well as using psychological principles and techniques taken from therapies such as CBT and ACT.

What is couples therapy like?

Your first session will typically be the start of an ongoing ‘getting to know you’ process.  Your therapist will focus on the concerns that have brought you to therapy right now, but may also ask about the history of your relationship.  Your therapist will work hard to get to know each of you as individuals, while also paying attention to how the two of you together create your unique relationship dynamics.  When things start to go badly in your relationship, our therapists will see it as being caused by a particular ‘cycle’ or ‘pattern’ that you are caught up in, rather than blaming either or both of you.  We see the things you do in this relationship as attempts to protect yourself or your relationship (even though they may be creating distance), rather than being concerned with whether it is ‘wrong or right’.  We understand that it takes courage to come to couples therapy and will take the time to ensure that you feel secure and supported throughout the process.
